Acquaintances

The Junior Officers presented in front (yay red!)
The night was still young when the program for this year's Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers - CPU Student Chapter Acquaintance Party commenced. Everyone from freshmen up to fifth-year was excited for the program to start, only to find out that the first part will bore everyone in the room - dull guest speakers and unimportant things to be acquainted about. And that only ended until the dinner was served when the real enjoyment of the party started.

Fitness

Posing after the run run. Such relief!
I ran five kilometers this morning as a support for a city-wide event of one of the departments of my college. Man, it was hell of a marathon!

The fun run started with the sun shining, but rain covered the skies after five minutes while we were on the way. In less than an hour or more, of course, we all finished the race in wet clothes. The clouds were that heavy that the rain did not stop until the awarding ceremonies ended.

Anyhow I am looking forward to joining more of these events. When long ago I would resist to every physical exercise, now I actually like it. Yes to fitness!

Alcohol Abstinence

From L-R: Mark, myself, Celeste, Sweet (Amiel's bag in the middle)
Without plan, I, Celeste, Sweet and Mark went out for dinner tonight at KFC in SM City Iloilo. The initial plan was to drink a few bottles of beer after dinner to doze off this week's stresses but I insisted to just go have dinner (yup, I can actually resist alcohol). Obviously, I succeed.
Amiel, after a sent text, came just before we were about to start eating. The bill's on Mark, which made everyone happy. Plus there's no alcohol involved, so that gave me happiness times two!

Looking Forward

Aemryl lying on the field to sight the pin
As part of our Civil Engineering curriculum, Elementary and Higher Surveying is a subject we are required to take this year. I'm not making it appear that we're forced to take it, but we're even overwhelmed to have it now. It is our first professional subject taken in our stay in the college, a course we're all anxious about when we were freshmen and sophomores because it appears pleasurable with the then juniors on the field.

Sports-filled Sunday

June 10th marked significant episodes in the field of sports. Here are those, consecutively, in Philippine time:
  1. NBA Eastern Conference Game 7 of Miami Heat and Boston Celtics
  2. Manny Pacquiao versus Timothy Bradley for the former's Welterweight title
  3. Shakey's V-League Season 9 First Conference Finals Game 3 between University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo de Manila University
  4. French Open 2012 Men's Tennis Finals, Rafael Nadal versus Novak Djokovic
Yup, it was a sports-filled Sunday. And 'twas good that the odds were on my favor today.

Scripps and Spelling Bees

I watched a few episodes of the telecast of the Scripps National Spelling Bee 2012, and I must say that that was one heck of a Spelling competition. Kids not beyond their eighth grade spell words of different origins and, I reckon, out-of-this-world words - words I could not even pronounce myself and words I hardly knew ever existed - in front of a live audience. That's why I highly revere them for their dedication to spelling in such young ages.

With that, I share that I can relate to their situation, because I joined twice in a spelling bee competition way back when. I was in third year High School, representing my school and competing against the fifteen others in our division. I was blessed with a 2nd place during that year, 2008. But since I wasn't able to be in first place, I was again sent to contest during my fourth year in High School. Although, sadly, I slid down to third place for a reason that I was not conditioned that much compared to the year before. But I was happy, for I brought honor to my school for two consecutive years, and to think that I beat the others being the second and third place among fifteen.

That was so long ago that I already lost my keen sense of spelling words often misspelled. How do you correctly spell accommodate again? What about lieutenant? Ack, I need to redeem my spelling prowess.

Keen Literacy

continue what you do, kid
Sitting on the floor looking for some books shelved under, I set an eye to this kid who grabbed a book from the children’s section and positioned on the floor for a read.
